What is rookie rugby?Rookie Rugby is the nationwide introductory rugby program that provides both teachers and coaches with a safe, fun, and inclusive non-contact curriculum to introduce children to rugby.
Rookie Rugby is a game-based curriculum built on national guidelines for health and physical education curriculums. The program provides open-access, easy-to-follow game modules for leading a variety of activities that build introductory, non-contact rugby skills and provide teachers—including those that are unfamiliar with rugby—with new methods to promote physical literacy and practice Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). |
GRande prairie rugby programming
Grande Prairie Rugby runs Rookie Rugby programs both in the spring and the fall. We take pride in offering these to kids 4+. For the 2026 season, we are able to accept anyone born in 2022 and earlier, with ages determined as of December 31, 2026.
We run our program in developmentally appropriate age groups.
Beginner Rugby (2020-2022)
The 4-6 age group focuses on gross motor skills, such as running with the ball, kicking, and learning to pass. The curriculum is primarily game-based to make it both educational and enjoyable while maintaining their attention.
Non-Contact Flag Rugby (2017-2019)
The 7-9 age group begins with an introduction to flag rugby wearing tag belts, with an emphasis on learning how to pass backwards and run forwards. Once this is understood, passing between 1-2 players before a score will be added as well as kicking, offence, and defence break downs.

Registration Options
Due to an increase in Rugby Canada/Alberta fees, our prices are slightly higher than years past to ensure all players have Rugby Canada insurance. This allows all age groups to participate in ERU festivals should they choose; see coaches for more information.
We have 2 options for registration for our Rookie Rugby age groups: spring only or full year (spring and fall), we will also have a fall only option closer to that season.
For spring only, see programs.
Full year, see competitions.
